Why Surface-Level Values Can Hurt Your Business

Core values—everyone talks about them, but how many businesses truly live by them? It’s easy to slap a few noble-sounding principles on your website and call them “core values.” But superficial or “shake and bake” values can do more harm than good. If they’re not authentic, your customers, employees, and partners will see right through them.

Core values should be the heartbeat of your business. They aren’t just there for show—they shape how you hire, lead, grow, and serve. They provide direction when the path forward isn’t clear, and they keep you grounded in your mission when external pressures try to pull you off course. In short, they guide everything from your company culture to your long-term vision.

But let’s face it—many companies go through the motions of creating values without fully understanding their importance. Here’s why you need to dig deeper and avoid surface-level values at all costs.

Why Core Values Matter

They Define Your Identity

Your core values are the DNA of your company. They give everyone—both inside and outside the organization—a clear understanding of who you are, what you stand for, and what people can expect from you. Avoid vague, feel-good phrases that sound like they belong on a motivational poster. Instead, focus on specific, actionable values that genuinely reflect how you operate. Do you value innovation? Great—how do you foster that within your company? Be concrete about what your values mean in practice.

Your values are only as strong as your commitment to living them. They should be evident in every decision you make, from how you handle employee disputes to the way you interact with customers. Reinforce them through your leadership, company culture, and brand messaging. Your values should be felt—not just read on a wall.

Core values aren’t just a trendy business tool—they’re the foundation of long-term success. But they only work if they’re real, lived, and believed in by everyone in the company.
