A Lesson for Entrepreneurs

✈️ Secure Your Mask Before Assisting Others

A Lesson for Entrepreneurs

Imagine you are on a plane, miles up in the air, and suddenly the oxygen masks pop out of the overhead compartments.

You quickly reach for yours and put it on. But wait, don't rush to help your travel buddy just yet.

The rule is to secure your mask before assisting others. This phrase has been repeated countless times by flight attendants, yet the message still holds true – help yourself first so you can better help others. And as entrepreneurs, it’s a lesson we should take to heart.

The life of an entrepreneur is full of risks and challenges. Just like on a plane, emergencies are bound to happen, and we should always be ready to handle them. However, before we jump into action, we must take care of ourselves first. This means taking breaks, finding ways to relax, and prioritizing our mental and physical health. We can't pour from an empty cup, so we must always replenish ourselves first.

Moreover, entrepreneurs are natural problem-solvers, but when it comes to dealing with our own issues, we tend to neglect ourselves. We feel guilty for taking a day off or spending time alone. However, we should never feel bad about taking care of ourselves. It’s not selfish to put ourselves first; it's self-preservation. By doing this, we become better equipped to help others, our businesses, and ourselves.

Success is not a solo journey

Helping others can jumpstart our success, and that means being open and available to those who need it. Consider mentorship opportunities or sharing your knowledge and skills with others. Chances are you’ve faced similar challenges, and by sharing your experiences, you can inspire others to follow in your footsteps.

Not everyone is comfortable with reaching out for help even when they need it. As entrepreneurs, part of our job is to anticipate these moments and offer our support. Maybe it’s through a kind word, a listening ear, or lending a helping hand. Whatever it is, take the time to invest in the people around you.

As entrepreneurs, we have a unique responsibility to lead by example. In a world that glorifies hustle culture and burnout, it’s important to emphasize the critical importance of self-care and support. The next time you find yourself in a professional or personal struggle, remember to secure your mask first. Investing in ourselves, our mental and physical health, and our skills will allow us to help others with greater efficiency and generosity. By doing so, we can create a thriving and supportive community that benefits not only ourselves but everyone around us.
